As a child sees it, play is the most important / serious thing in life. Play builds the child. It is the essential part of a child’s education.
In 1885, the Boston Sand Gardens were generally sited as the first area set aside specifically for young children.
The Boston Sand Gardens were significant in the history of this country and the history of recreation / leisure services because it was the first attempt to provide formalized recreation to children. The attempt was a success; it brought many kids off the streets and into a place where they could be supervised and have "wholesome authority."
Since the initial period of rapid playground development in American cities, the issue of playground safety has been a subject of concern. Initially, the primary concern was that children be removed from the temptations and hazards of playing in the streets. However, it‘s also been found that playgrounds themselves contain inherent dangers.
According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, each year more than 200,000 children across the United States are treated in hospital emergency rooms due to playground and play area accidents. The toll on these children and their families is immeasurable. And the costs in terms of liability and litigation is staggering.

Playgrounds provide crucial and vital opportunities for children to play. There is substantial research showing the clear link between play and brain development, motor-skills, and social capabilities. All learning—emotional, social, motor and cognitive—is accelerated, facilitated, and fueled by the pleasure of play. Playgrounds that promote different types of play are vital for a child’s cognitive, emotional, physical, and social development.
